Ti Rakau - Māori Stick Game

The reason why I chose to include a video of this game here is because it is a game which I learned to play when I was in primary school. I had one teacher who use to teach us traditional games such as this and I remember that although I wasn't very good, I still throughly enjoyed it. It also allows for students to have a experience a form of Māori culture in a fun way, that isn't language based.

Māori Guitar Songs

The reason for including this video was because I am currently learning guitar and I think that Māori culture and language can be enhanced through song and waiata. I played backup guitar a couple of times for my mentor teacher in one of my placements and my goal for over the summer holidays is to become confident enough in my guitar playing ability to be able to play Māori songs like this to classes next year. This song is from a youtube playlist which has the chords and lyrics to many Māori songs.

By clicking on the above pictures you will be taken to a pdf with a wide range of traditional Māori games. These books provide useful ideas on how to include Māori culture into a class in ways other then just learning language.
